“BJ” Lacy honed his skills into building – masonry (brick mason) and general contracting. As an apprentice and later as a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State College, Greensboro, NC – which is now North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University – “BJ” knew the importance of education and perfecting his craft. He made the commute from Bladenboro, NC to Greensboro, NC in the pursuit of advancement in his craft and ultimately becoming an entrepreneur.

“BJ” believed in giving back to his family and the small community in which he lived. He wanted to leave a legacy within his family and ultimately within Bladenboro, NC. “BJ” was the walking example of “Each One, Teach One”. Upon the completion of his Technical Degree, he returned to Bladen County and taught his Brothers, Brother-in-laws, Nephews, and his own Children the craft of “laying brick” and the joy of contributing to building the community in which you live. Being a small, family-owned business, it was important to “BJ” that the Members of the Board were family members. Therefore, the initial Board Members were Benjamin Lacy, Jr. (CEO), Dr. Wilson A. Lacy (President), Dr. Cleopatrick Lacy (Vice President) and Mrs. Annie Julie Lacy (Secretary/Treasurer).

In 1988, BJ’s hard work, early mornings, late nights and building his community one brick at a time was rewarded. BJL Construction Company, Inc. was singled out for local, state and regional Honors in recognition of commitment to quality and service. BJL Construction Company, Inc. was chosen as one of the Nation’s Contractors of the Year by President Ronald Regan.

As the company began to grow and the business needs of the Construction industry evolved, so did services offered by BJL Construction. BJL Construction Company, Inc. now serves its community, State and local Government, and other small minority business contractors by specializing in MBE, MWBE, DBE, and Section 3 Consultant Services. We also provide our State and Local Government and Architectural/Engineering partners Construction Management Services.
Benjamin (BJ) Lacy, Jr. would be proud to know that his small company, with origins in the small town of Bladenboro, NC is now far reaching and continues to make a positive impact in the Contracting industry.
